The Virginian-Pilot © May 17, 2010 Coast Guard Cmdr. Diane Durham, commanding officer of the Portsmouth-based cutter Forward, recently received the service's Capt. John G. Witherspoon Inspirational Leadership Award. She was commended for fostering a climate that encouraged her shipmates to be prepared, exceed standards and continually improve counter-drug cooperation between the United States and Panama, according to a news release. Durham was commissioned in1989 from Officer Candidate School at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown. She was the executive assistant to the commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area before her current post.
