Japanese Navy Ships to Visit The Downtown Norfolk Waterfront!

Norfolk, VA. (July 9, 2011) - The City of Norfolk will host the first public visit of Japanese Navy ships to the downtown waterfront from Tuesday, August 2, 2011 to Sunday, August 7, 2011. Three ships comprise the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Training Squadron: JS Kashima (TV3508) 469’, JS Asagiri (TV3516) 449’, and JS Mineyuki (DD124) 426’. The squadron includes 750 officers and enlisted sailors, including 150 newl y commissioned ensigns in the Japanese Navy.
The purpose of the visit is to provide an opportunity for the sailors and junior officers to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of the relationship between the JMSDF and the U.S. Navy. Norfolk’s “support of this joint alliance between the U.S. and Japanese militaries is an important contribution to maritime security in the Asia-Pacific”, according to CAPT Hiroshi Egawa, Naval Attaché, from the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D. C.
Norfolk was selected as one of only two US ports of call for this tour. The squadron will be visiting Tampa, Florida before calling on Norfolk.
The ships will be docked at the Nauticus Pier, located at 1 Waterside Drive in downtown Norfolk and will welcome public visits from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm Wednesday through Saturday as follows:
Wed. Aug 03: Kashima- 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Thurs. Aug 04: Asagiri- 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Fri. Aug 05: Mineyuki- 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Sat. Aug 06: Asagiri and Mineyuki- 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
The public is invited to the official welcome ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, August 2, 11:30 am at the Armed Forces Memorial, Town Point Park, adjacent to Nauticus.
The crews of the three ships will be attending a variety of events and attractions throughout the region during this visit to Norfolk and the Hampton Roads region.
