35th Annual AT&T Norfolk Harborfest® Commemorative Poster: Melissa Malone does not consider herself a Virginia Beach local, but a Hampton Roads local.  She was born at Norfolk General Hospital and grew up in the Kempsville area of Virginia Beach. Growing up in Tidewater she quickly learned that it is the water that blurs the lines between the cities.  It is the water that continuously brings her back to Hampton Roads; and is the reason that she still refers to the region as her home. Approaching the idea of submitting a painting for the 2011 commemorative Harborfest Poster reminded her of the many aspects of the regions waters, ports, and history that she holds so dear.  It is through this attachment to the region, that Melissa felt she would be able to truly express the beauty, sentiment, excitement and pride that comes with living in, and visiting Hampton Roads.
“After meeting with Festevents in March, I left feeling a sense of nostalgia”, says Melissa. “The word serenity was used in conversation and it stuck with me on my drive home to Charlottesville. My husband and I love the water so we get back to the Tidewater region quite a bit, especially enjoying the perks of boating on the Elizabeth River. The images in the painting come from the river and the surrounding tributaries and landscapes. A true local would notice that the painting itself is not possible; you cannot row a dingy from Waterside to Portside, etc. But, it was the gentleman rowing through The Hague that reminded me of quiet mornings on the water, when all you hear are the sounds of the oars pushing through the river, the distant foghorn, and local wildlife. It was seeing him that started the concept of this year’s poster.”

Melissa describes the canvas as a quiet moment, or a pause, as the sailboat owner is rowing away from his vessel, a lost silhouette in the early morning sun. She thinks of him as pre-event or post-event; an individual that enjoys all aspects of the water, like an early morning row, and/or the hard work that goes into caring for his craft. As a matter of perspective Melissa needed a skyline, so she combined a little downtown Norfolk, with some industry on the horizon, along with residential landscape of Portsmouth. She does not normally sign the front of her canvases, but wanted to a personal tie to the painting, which is why Melissa named the sailing vessel after her mother, calling it LINDA’S LADY.   Melissa worked from about 15 different photographs, taken from different regions of the river, at differing times of the day, etc. combining them into what she likes to think of as a peaceful moment on our water.”
